I hate mornings

1,415 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: Echoes in the Triangle
Location: Quarters
Timeline: Prior to Walking on Eggshells

Mornings had become the bain of Lanna’s life, the worst time of the day for her morning sickness just as the name suggested. She couldn’t wait for the next couple of weeks to pass so she could get past the first trimester and start enjoying her pregnancy instead. She walked out of the bathroom looking pale and washed out, none of the usual suggestions seemed to be working for her.

“Ohhh just let me curl up and hide for the next couple of weeks!” She offered Jarin the best smile she could muster. “I hate mornings right now!”

"I'm very sorry my love" he offered a sympathetic smile in return. "If it gets bad enough come to sickbay and we can give you something for the nausea" he suggested taking a sip from his coffee cup. He had already gotten their son Jayce dressed and ready for the day. He would drop him off at daycare on his way to sickbay.

"I know you hate it now, but you loved being pregnant with Jayce” by this time he was running his hand up and down her back with a massage like firmness.

Lanna nodded. “I honestly can’t wait to get past the three month mark, at least then I can start enjoying it!” She offered the best smile she could muster. “Last time the usual ginger tea, or biscuits seemed to work but this time it’s a different story.”

“We could add some mint to your ginger tea” he started massaging her shoulders “do you want me to get you a cup?”

Lanna nodded. “Please, right now I’ll try anything as long as I don’t end up back in the bathroom again.”

Jarin went to fetch the tea. “Ginger and mint tea, hot” he ordered at the replicator and in just seconds was on his way back to Lanna. “Hopefully this will help my dear” he sat the tea down on a table near her. “I need you to promise that if it gets to bad you will get checked up in sickbay. Don’t need you getting dehydrated” he was saying it with a loving tone and a smile on his face. He didn’t want anything happening to her or the baby.

“I promise” Lanna nodded as she picked up the tea taking a sip. “Thank you Imzadi.”

Jarin smiled at his wife for a second before breaking the silence “do you have a busy day?”

Lanna sipped some more of her tea before answering. “The usual array of appointments, along with some planned bridge time.” She offered a smile. “You know me I love to be on the bridge.”

Jarin smiled at his wife “so typical day.” He got back to a position where he could massage her tense shoulders “pending any emergencies want to do lunch?”

“I’d love to!” Lanna nodded offering a warm smile. “I’m normally feeling better by lunch, so hopefully I’ll be able to eat with no repercussions.” She paused to sip a little more of her tea. “Actually this tea isn’t bad.”

“My mother always gave this to us when we had upset tummies as kids” Jarin smiled “so I guess she gets credit for this one.” The doctor shrugged “I don’t know who’s idea it was, as long as it’s helping my girl feel better.”

“Delix did suggest mint, I guess I just never considered it before.” Lanna offered a smile. “I just hate that it leaves my poor stomach muscles feeling achy all day long. Morning sickness is a curse I’m sure! When I get time I’m going to put my feet up and have a nice snooze.”

“After shift” Jarin was still running his wife’s shoulders and neck “come home, take a shower.” Jarin paused for a second “I’ll pick up little man and get dinner on the table. You can spend time with him or read or whatever you need to do to feel better.” He thought a second about not trying to sound bossy “or come home and sleep whatever you want my love. I’ll take care of everything else.”

“Now that sounds wonderful” Lanna smiled warmly enjoying the gentle rub Jarin was giving her. “I don’t know what I’ve done to get you, but I’m certainly glad I did it!”

Her last statement put a huge smile on his face but Jarin replied "I'm the lucky one, my family means everything to me."

Lanna smiled. “I know it does, and I’d do anything for all of you.” She sipped her tea again. “ This actually works.”

“Thankfully” Jarin said with a smile and the sound of relief in his voice. He didn’t like or want to see anyone ill, injured, in pain, etc. He especially didn't want to see Lanna or their child feel ill. His family was something he never thought he would have, but now it’s the most important thing in his life.

“Let’s hope it lasts” T’Lanna smiled as she sipped a little more. “I’m sorry for worrying you, I know it must be hard concentrating on looking after others while worrying about me. I promise I’ll look after myself.”

“I know you take care of yourself and you are right, if you are sick or something I want to be by your side.” Jarin shrugged a bit “my patients are important to me but not as important as my family.”

Lanna nodded. “Likewise Imzadi, I want nothing more than for you to be at my side especially if I’m not feeling the best.”

“I’ll always strive to stay by your side” Jarin smiled and leaned over and kissed his wife’s cheek.

“I know you will.” Lanna gave him a hug before she leaned back. “Guess I’d best try some light breakfast before I head to the bridge.”

“What can I get you, my love” he asked his wife. He wanted her to get as much rest before her bridge duty shift.

“Good question!” Lanna offered a wry smile. “How’s about some toast, and I’ll see how I feel after that?”

“Sure thing my love” Jarin went to the replicator and ordered “toast.” The computer responded with “there are two hundred and four variations of toast on file, please specify.” You could hear a sigh and huff come from Jarin as he turned to his wife “plain toast, buttered, with jam, avocado toast, what type of toast would you enjoy my dear?”

Lanna offered a wry smile. “Plain toast lightly cooked with butter please. No good getting too adventurous just yet.”

Jarin gave a nod and then turned back to the replicator “buttered toast” there was a beep and a few seconds later he was handing Lanna her toast.

“Thank you.” Lanna smiled warmly before she started eating, having spent so long in the bathroom she was feeling rather hungry now. “That…is so good!”

"I'm glad to see you eating something" Jarin smiled at his wife. "My love if you are okay I should probably report to sickbay" he was due for his duty shift in about twenty minuets but Jarin always liked to be a little bit early to prepare and get report on any patients currently being treated by the last shifts medical staff.

“Of course” Lanna smiled and nodded. “Do you have time to drop off Jayce on your way?”

"Of course I do" he kissed Lanna on the cheek. "You ready for nursery buddy" Jarin asked his son with a big smile on his face.

Lanna grinned as Jayce hurried over to give her a kiss and a hug before grabbing his little bag that he took to nursery. “Have a good day sweetheart, mummy will see you later.”

Jarin picked up his son and kissed him on the cheek. "I love you babe and if you get to feeling worse, come to sickbay" the medical officer smiled at Lanna as he pinned on his comm-badge ready for his work day.

“I will, that’s a promise” Lanna smiled warmly. “Love you too. See you later.”

With that Jarin and Jayce were off to nursery and sickbay. Jarin was hoping that the love of his life would get to feeling better. Who knew what the day ahead would bring and he didn’t want her getting to stressed out.
